How I Am Downsizing My Makeup

Wednesday, October 21, 2015

Let's be honest, even though others have more than me, I have way too much makeup for me, there I said it. I won't ever finish up the makeup I own. Because of the blogging that I love to do I'm always looking at what's new at the drugstore or researching higher end makeup to purchase. I've also accumulated tons of samples from subscription boxes like Ipsy and Birchbox.

It's still a work in progress, I still have two drawers full of face products. Today, I went through some of my makeup and thought of these 5 questions as I held each product in my hand, then decided what to do with it. I already wrote a little about it here

1. How old is the product?
Everything has an expiration date, how old is this? When did I purchase it? How long should I use it for? Does it need to be thrown out? I'm not an expert so o had to look this up here

Mascara 3 months
Liquid Foundation/Concealer 6 months -1 year
Lipstick 2 years
Lipgloss 1 year
Powder Foundation/ Blush Eyeshadow 2 years
Nail Polish 2 years

2. When was the last time I used it?
I found a lot of products I hadn't used in a while, time to give to someone who will put it to good use, A.K.A Betsy!

3. Get over the "pretty packaging", do I still love the product?
Why do we do this? It's just packaging.. The packaging doesn't go on our face! Ha!

4. Am I keeping it just because it was expensive?
I am so guilty of this, again, someone else could put it to good use. Especially because it's expensive you'd want it to get used up.

5. Do I have a dupe? Which one do I love more?
It happens, you buy two or more of the same item, color or product in general. Keep one. Be strict about it.

Again, because I don't own as much makeup as other people here in he blogging world, these tips might work for some, while other tips may work for others... How have you tried to down size your stash? Leave me some tips in the comments section below!

  1. This is such a good post. I downsized my collection when we moved and it was SO necessary!

  2. Such a good idea! I have SO much and definitely need to get rid of some makeup...I just absolutely HATE it. But if someone else can use, and I'm not, then why not pass it on.

  3. Love this idea, I definitely need to do a makeup and nail polish purge. It'll be so hard to get rid of some things, but I'm sure it'll feel great :)

  4. When I went through my nail polish a couple of months ago, the dupe one was huge for me- I had so many colors that were so similar, so I got rid of the one that was older or that had a not so great application or wear time.

  5. Getting rid of makeup is never fun, but it is almost always necessary. Great post!

  6. I so needed this post - I keep things for no good reason. I give a lot to my mom though and she's happy about that so I'll get a bag ready and give it to her at Thanksgiving...thanks for the push! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  7. Hmm good to know! I never know that you should throw out your lipstick after 2 years. I have a few I should probably throw out then haha! <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes
